Getting started with (Lolin) Wemos D1 Mini - Setup

So, you’ve been on Amazon, eBay, or Aliexpress and got yourself a Wemos D1 Mini… now what?

Firstly you’ll need to download Arduino IDE and the CH340 driver.

Once you’re done, and you plugin the Wemos via USB, you will be able to see it in Windows Device Manager, as below. It will be labled with a COM number, in this case COM5.

Windows Device manager

Now, open up the Arduino IDE and we’ll need to tell it you have an ESP8266 powered device.

Goto File->Preferences and paste in http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json. If you have other things in here or need other things in here later, just comma seperate them. You can also find out more information on ESP8266 setup at their Github repo.

Under Tools->Board, open up “Board manager” and search for “ESP8266”, then click install.

Back under “Tools” select the Port which was listed in Device Manager. You’re then ready to load up an example from File->Examples and send it to the Wemos with the arrow button.
